about

Wrote this on Instagram back when I wrote it! "“Sometimes art takes years and sometimes it takes minutes, and the timeline is usually surprisingly hard to predict. Every once in a while, a story or a song or an idea comes along so easily and so clearly that you almost have to wonder if someone else wrote it and sent it through you, because even though it’s yours, it just didn’t seem to take much effort? Envy was one of those songs. My tattoo caught my eye and I started thinking about why I’d gotten it – for a variety of reasons, but mostly to represent ‘facing the sunshine’ and focusing on the positive, like I imagine sunflowers do. Most of the time I’m inspired by this idea, but one of the reasons I wanted it in the first place was to act as a reminder, because optimism doesn’t always come naturally for me. And I looked at my sunflower and I wondered if it was easy for them, if their instinct to face the sunlight just came naturally. And then I caught myself being jealous of a flower – but with more admiration than anger, which I hope the song ultimately reflects. So I grabbed my phone and I wrote the lyrics in like under ten minutes from the bathtub. Sometimes it takes forever to craft a line or find a meter that feels right, but for this one my brain was just like, ‘I got this.’ And the melody came along basically simultaneously. I nitpicked it the next morning, but even including that, this was probably the fastest I’ve ever written a song. That morning, I recorded it from the couch, with my dogs sitting by my side."

lyrics

I envy the sunflower for being so easily able to follow the light
I wish to be heliotropic, and never myopic, and always so bright

I envy the tree for being so easily able to branch out and grow
I wish to be strong and never wrong; I wish to stay upright even when the wind blows

Oh oh oh, oh, oh
Oh oh oh, oh, oh

I envy the otters for holding each other so tightly they don't drift apart
I wish to float, on my own, with no boat, and recognize love as an art

I envy the bees for trusting the breeze, and helping the world to be sweet
I wish to be selfless, but never helpless; I wish to spread color and lead like a queen

Oh oh oh, oh, oh
Oh oh oh, oh, oh

I wish to stand tall, but I'd hate to make shadows
I'd stop feeling small if I could, but then I wouldn't fit the clothes I've made, I know

I envy the leaves for changing color, and bringing some light to this world
I might spend some time on the ground, but I hope when I'm stepped on I'll still make a sound

Oh oh oh, oh, oh
Oh oh oh, oh, oh
