“My senior year, I was president of my school’s Spectrum GSA club, and it was difficult to know how hard to fight for various issues in the school. It was exhausting and overwhelming and frustrating, trying to figure out where to put my energy and wondering if I was doing enough. This song was born out of those feelings, but it also summarized my thoughts and feelings about the bigger world of activism and politics. The task of ‘picking your battles’ is important one and a confusing one. You can’t put your energy everywhere, so you have to make choices, and those choices are hard. At the same time, if we only tried to fix the most pressing issues, we’d never get past debating what those are. A lot of the problems in society, the -isms and the -phobias, are systemic and huge and overwhelming. But we can’t use the grandness of a problem as an excuse not to address specific incidents. We’re not just pawns, we’re active players, and individuals also need to be held accountable. Hence ‘The little things matter too.’ It can be discouraging when small moments of justice don’t seem to help anything in the long run, but they still matter. And it’s definitely possible to spread yourself too thin, but maybe it’s also possible to use each victory as an energizing launch into the next.” -@MiaStegner on Instagram, 2/3/19
lyrics
I'll stand up and speak but how soon should I cave?
They say pick your battles. How should I know when to behave?
They say pick your battles. How many? Which ones?
They say pick your battles. Staying quiet is no fun
If I pick every battle, will I grow tired and weak?
If I limit myself, will I forget how to speak up at all?
I'll stand up and speak but how soon should I cave?
They say pick your battles. How should I know when to behave?
What if I pick every one? When will I know if I've won?
What if I pick every one? What if I just hide or run?
I'll stand up and speak but how soon should I cave?
They say pick your battles. How should I know when to behave?
The little things are what we can change
The little things are what we can do
The little things are where we can start
The little things matter too
They say don't worry about the little things
Save your energy for the war
But I think we can be like loaded springs
I want battles. Give me more
The little things are what we can change
(They say don't worry about the little things.)
The little things are what we can do
(Save your energy for the war.)
The little things are where we can start
(But I think we can be like loaded springs.)
The little things matter too
(I want battles. Give me more.)
