“This song happened because for my eighteenth birthday, I stayed at The Elizabeth Hotel in Colorado, where you can check out instruments. I got to play with a banjo and ukuleles and a mandolin. I made up a simple chord progression by ear on the mandolin, and I didn’t even know what chords I was playing, but I recorded it in the hotel room on my cellphone and crafted lyrics around it later. This is the only song on the album for which the vocals were recorded outside which is why you can hear birds and dogs and a bit of wind (it’s the same audio from the video I uploaded last May).” -@MiaStegner on Instagram, 2/1/19
lyrics
Give a little take a lot, give a lot take a little
Give a lot take a lot, give a little take a little
Whatever you do, you gotta try to
Give and take, don’t take it all, don’t give it all away
And I know that I'm doing okay
Because today, I decided that I want a brighter wardrobe
And nothing will get in my way
And if it does, I’ll just keep wearing gray for a while
Until something makes me smile
And I break down in the best of ways
Like I did yesterday
When I decided to press play
Give a little take a lot, give a lot take a little
Give a lot take a lot, give a little take a little
Whatever you do, you gotta try to
Give and take, don’t take it all, don’t give it all away
